Born in South Central Los Angeles, the saxophonist idolized James Brown and took much influence from Maceo Parker and Cannonball Adderley. He first made a name for himself within the music industry during the 1980s, when he became a highly requested session musician.
Ringo’s sound falls firmly in the African pop genre, giving expression to the “ukuxhentsa” rhythms that had inspired the singer in his youth when he used to listen to “amagqirha” or traditional healers in his neighborhood and appreciate their rhythms.
Salif Keïta is an internationally recognized afro-pop singer-songwriter from Mali. He is unique not only because of his reputation as the Golden Voice of Africa, but because he has albinism and is a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita.
